Thoughts on gum
- Mar 26th 2012
Back from Von Trapp land, talk about gorgeous scenery and food! For the most part Austria isn’t as crazy about artificial ingredients as we are, most of the true junk food I saw was imported. Sure they’ve got sodas, candies and snackies, but they tended to be lower in sugar and crap in general.
That is until I checked out the gum. I was in the airport getting a big bottle of water for the flight and saw a pack of gum near the register. I picked it up in hopes of getting rid of some of my change and future relief from that special kind of stank mouth you can only get on a long flight. I showed the pack to Dan who immediately read the ingredient list out loud to me.
That’s when he figured I lost my mind for buying it. I didn’t have my glasses so I assumed European gum wouldn’t be full of toxic chemicals, I was so wrong…
Sweeteners alone, we’re looking at:
- Acesulfame K
Any of them alone would be sufficient to sweeten one piece of gum, god only knows why they’re all in there. I was mortified, I couldn’t believe I actually bought this. Even when it comes to gum, make no assumptions regarding ingredients and make sure to read labels.
In case you’re wondering, the pack is sitting next to me. We never opened it but I kept it because I wanted to share this info with you all. Read you labels kids! No matter what you’re buying you may be in for a rude awakening.
