When I was little, my mom would buy us cookies at the supermarket. There was one I was obsessed with and it was hard to find. The store eventually stopped selling it, so that was the tragic end for me (Hey, I was like 6 years old, this was huge in my world).
Well recently, I found a box of them at my local market and bought them immediately. I couldn’t believe my good luck, that is, until I tasted one. GROSS! This wasn’t the cookie I revered and adored as a child, it had a metallic taste that couldn’t be missed. The flavor was like a hint of what it used to be, what a bummer.
I remember things tasting differently as a kid, turns out I’m right.
Here’s a video from Upworthy dot com called “Why Food In 1957 Tasted Better Than Food Today”. Made by Sara Critchfield, the video explains what I’m talking about and why that is. The video is 3:51 and totally worth watching, it’s cute and informative.
I say bring back real ingredients and kill the new ones, all they’re doing is giving us less flavor and making us fatter. My lesson? If I want good cookies I make them. That way I know exactly what’s in them and there’s no preservatives, artificial colors or high-fructose corn syrup and they’re delicious. It takes a little time but is so worth it, home-made always wins.
